چکیده

We present a real-time algorithm for foreground–background segmentation. Sample background values at each pixel are quantized into codebooks which represent a compressed form of background model for a long image sequence. This allows us to capture structural background variation due to periodic-like motion over a long period of time under limited memory. The codebook representation is efficient in memory and speed compared with other background modeling techniques. Our method can handle scenes containing moving backgrounds or illumination variations, and it achieves robust detection for different types of videos. We compared our method with other multimode modeling techniques. In addition to the basic algorithm, two features improving the algorithm are presented—layered modeling/detection and adaptive codebook updating. For performance evaluation, we have applied perturbation detection rate analysis to four background subtraction algorithms and two videos of different types of scenes. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Hybrid Codebook Model for Foreground Object Segmentation and Shadow/Highlight Removal

Real-time foreground object extraction is an important subject for computer vision applications. Model-based background subtraction methods have been used to extract the foreground objects. Different from previous methods, this paper introduces a hybrid codebook-based background subtraction method by combining the mixture of Gaussian (MOG) with the codebook (CB) method. We propose an ellipsoid ...

Dynamic Codebook for Foreground Segmentation in a Video

The foreground segmentation in a video is a way to extract changes in image sequences. It is a key task in an early stage of many applications in the computer vision area. The information of changes in the scene must be segmented before any further analysis could be taken place. However, it remains with difficulties caused by several real-world challenges such as cluttered backgrounds, changes ...

An Advanced Codebook Background Model Using Confidence and Membership Function

This paper introduces an advanced codebook model for foreground-background segmentation. The improvement is two-fold. First, to cope with changing global lumination, we develop the conventional codebook with confidence functions. Similarities of both brightness and normalized color-vector are integrated confidence-weightedly to form overall similarity. A designed codeword-update progress also c...

A Color Similarity Measure for Robust Shadow Removal in Real Time

We introduce an approach for realtime segmentation of a scene into foreground objects, background, and object shadows superimposed on the background. To segment foreground objects, we use an adaptive thresholding method, which is able to deal with rapid changes of the overall brightness. The segmented image usually includes shadows cast by the objects onto the background. Our approach is able t...
